Sharing the Blessings of the Divine
Introductory Notes:
Satsang translates literally to mean Holy
Company. Whenever souls gather together, regardless of race,
creed or culture to share spiritually uplifting moments, that
is regarded as Satsang. You have heard it said when two or
more are gathered in my name, I too shall be there. These
words spoken by Jesus are universally true across all boundaries.
Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba says wheresoever my glories are
sung, I Am There.
Today we are in a period in which a deep
and profound healing of all souls is taking place. It is literally
the coming together of all faiths, all paths to God under
the umbrella of the One. We often hear it said that one God
is the true God and all others are inferior or false Gods.
In today's world this is the primary point of conflict, one
which causes all the seeds of hate, arrogance, violence and
ultimately death and destruction. Deep study of the esoteric
(hidden) meaning of the perennial wisdom from which each religion
pours forth, reveals they all are heading for the very same
One God. The issue ultimately becomes one of breaking through
the mental constructs of how we define, and thereby relate
to God and then to be wise and compassionate enough not to
judge another's path as better or inferior to one's own. In
the words of Sai Baba, If you are a Christian, be a good Christian,
if a Buddhist, then be a good Buddhist
This comment he
extends to cover ALL FAITHS that are based upon the surrender
of ego, service to the One and the five fundamental principles
upon which their common purpose is built. These are:
Truth
Love
Non-Violence
Peace
Right Action
The ultimate objective is to be able to
reconcile the need to be right about God and to move from
beyond the God Transcendent or God Immanent, through to realise
that the fundamental tenet of God as omniscient, omnipotent
and omnipresent is all that matters. Therefore God is and
always has been. Even in the thoughts of those who would see
God as different, the very thought itself is the presence
of God. But more importantly, is to realise that God is in
your heart and your SELF in God's heart. Everything else is
part of the illusion (Maya), or the game that is being played
out in our field of consciousness.
His Holiness the Dalai Llama spoke beautifully
on this point just recently in an interview. When asked whether
or not he had any desire to return to Tibet and fight for
her freedom, he categorically stated NO! Then after a deep
pause, he qualified it as follows. "The mind can find
any number of reasons to justify why it should engage in the
conflict. It is always seeking distractions that serve its
limited self. But to engage in such conflict pains the heart,
for the heart does not understand. The heart is the core of
Divine Love, and Divine love cannot engage in judgement and
duality and still remain at peace. Therefore the heart finds
itself in conflict and when the heart is in conflict, the
conflict itself moves from being outside in the physical reality
of men, women, children, politics, economics, religion and
worldly affairs into our very own being. All the while the
heart is in conflict, love is denied."
I cannot think of any better way to explain
the purpose of Satsang. It is an experience that you can make
with pure intent as one of great beauty and upliftment. It
is about focussing the mind on the sole purpose of incarnation
- God (howsoever you define God). Once we are focussed on
this as our purpose, then it is time to use Universal Truths
to detach the hold of the mind and unlock the chambers of
the heart to let love flow supreme from our being. In Satsang
we will be actively focussed in the SPIRITUAL activity of
devotion to the one. This involves what Sai Baba calls the
use of Spiritual Power (to the) Individual who performs the
Ritual.
Note that we can only truly get spiritual
benefit from rituals and symbols when we pay special attention
to their inner meaning and significance, while making use
of them in our daily spiritual efforts. Otherwise they degenerate
into meaningless and mechanical practices which do nothing
to advance our spiritual progress. This is also true of blind
orthodoxy and fanaticism. Rituals, symbols ands other external
forms of creeds are like the husk which is essential up to
a certain period for the life and growth of the seedling it
covers. But, after a certain stage of development the same
husk becomes a choking prison if not cast aside by the outgrowing
grain which is by far of higher value than the husk. Apart
from stunting the moral and spiritual growth of individuals,
blind attachment to symbols and rituals together with indiscriminate
adherence to the letter of dogma has been the breeding ground
of exclusiveness giving birth to bigotry and violence in the
name of religion. Let alone crusades and jehads.
To quote Sai Baba directly , "I call
upon you to adhere to a new rite, seva or service; a new yajna,
sacrifice of the ego; a new mode of worship, saranaagathi,
dedication of all thoughts, words and deeds at the Lotus Feet
of the Lord and acceptance of all that happens as gifts of
Grace from Him
.There is a need to-day to discover the
inner spring of all faiths, the spring that fertilises the
outer rites and ceremonies."
In this Satsang you will notice that at
the front of the room there is a chair, an altar and an image
of Sai Baba. To understand the purpose of such these notes
are designed to help you.
Firstly "Who is Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai
Baba".
Bhagavan means "The Adorable One".
Usually a title of Vishnu, the 'one who pervades". Being
both Immanent and transcendent, Vishnu is the preserver of
all. This translates in a trinity of Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu
in that Vishnu is the "Father". Hence an incarnation
of Vishnu in the form of an Avatar, such as Sai Baba is regarded
by saints and sages across all faiths as an incarnation of
the Absolute Father in human form.
Sri: Signifies the subtle beauty, charm
and grace of auspiciousness embedded in the Divine. It also
stands for the radiance of spiritual manifestation and power
in any particular Goddess or God.
Sathya: this means pure and absolute Truth
Sai: Mother God
Baba: Father God
Chanting the name of God in World Religions
Christianity: "Oh, Give thanks unto
the Lord, call upon His Name, make known His deeds among the
people. Sing unto Him, sing Psalms unto Him, talk ye of all
His wondrous works. Glory ye in His Holy Name. Let the heart
of them rejoice that seek the Lord."
(Psalm 105)
Islam: "Praise the Name of the Lord,
the Most High who hath created and completely formed His creatures
and who determineth them to various ends and driveth them
to attain the same."
(Al Quran)
Sikhism: "Sing and Praise His endless
attributes. Singing and listening to His Name and keeping
Love for Him in mind will make sorrows disappear and happiness
will take the place, wherever you be."
(Guru Nanak)
Hinduism: "Of Him who is One, Sages
speak as manifold and call Him by many Names. The Suras, Maharshis
and Siddhas with joined hands invoke Him and cry 'All Hail',
chanting His Praises with resounding songs."
(Rig Veda)
Namasmarana- A Universal Sadhana - Some explanations
on the power of repeating the name of the Lord
(ie; Om Namah Christaya; Om Namah Shivaya;
Om Namah Yehovah; Om Namah Buddhaya; Om Namah Mazdaya;
..
1. "Hindus, Muslims, Christians
and all ancient yet monotheistic faiths may differ in some
religious customs but they are all one in the glorification
of the Name of God. All of them ask their followers to recite
the Name of the One Lord, though the manner in which the Name
is recited varies from religion to religion. Each one remembers,
respects and recites the name as formed in his own tongue.
Each one turns the rosary according to the direction of his
own religion. All the same, for everyone there is nothing
so fruitful, so universal, so holy among spiritual disciplines
as this sadhana (discipline) of Namasmarana, Japa or Dhyana."
2. "The Muslims pray in the
Name of Allah, the Jews pray in the name of Jehovah, the Vaishnavites
pray in the Name of Phullabjaksha, the Saivites pray in the
Name of Shambhu. The one to whom prayers are offered in this
manner is the One God for all mankind, though He is addressed
and prayed to by the different groups of people by different
names."
3. "Know that all Dharmas
(right paths) have One God, that all hearts are motivated
by the same God and that all Names and Forms denote only One
Godhead. Develop that 'Ekabhav', that attitude of unity and
non-differentiation between Divine Names of all creeds, of
all countries and of all Faiths. This is the Message of Love
I bring to you, which I want you to understand and follow.
Spread that Love, like that Love. If that Love must grow in
you and become deep and abiding, you have to do the spiritual
practice of reciting Names of God, remembering His Love and
Mercy, His Majesty and His Glory."
4. "You can adopt and practise
any of the various and countless Names of God as enumerated
by Sages of all lands and all languages. When you awaken to
the duties of the day, repeat the Name; when you retire after
the duties of the day, recite It again. Have It as your constant
companion and inspiration. You can then never falter or fail.
You will grow purer and stronger every moment."
5. "Rama, Krishna, Jesus,
Allah, Mazda, Eshu, Lakshmi, Dhurga these are names of the
Many-faceted One. When you pay attention to one facet, the
rest are not neglected or negated. When the devotee dives
into the flood of Bliss which One Name-Form confers, he is
diving into the same ocean of Bliss that the Full is. The
waters of this ocean are not separated by lines drawn on them
to demarcate "this God's Region" and "that
God's Region". Plunge anywhere, you are plunging into
the self-same Bliss."
6. "Namasmarana, thus done,
unties people by making them realize that they are all children
of one and the same God and thus paves the way for the Father/Motherhood
of God and the Brother/Sisterhood of Man."
The Prophesies that pertain to Sri Sathya Sai
Baba's arrival.
There are countless prophesies that predict
the arrival of Sai Baba at this time. Rather than name or
quote them all now let me just put one from Sai Baba himself
spoken on Christmas Day 1972.
"At the time when Jesus was merging
in the supreme principle of divinity, he communicated some
news to his followers that has been interpreted in different
ways by commentators and those who relish the piling of writings
upon writing, meanings upon meanings, until it all swells
up into a huge mess.
" The statement is simple: 'He who
sent me among you will come again", and he pointed to
a lamb. The lamb is merely a symbol, a sign. It stands for
the voice 'Ba-Ba'; the announcement was of the advent of Baba.
'His name will be Truth', Christ declared. 'Sathya means Truth'.
'He will wear a robe of red, a blood-red robe'. (Here Baba
pointed to the Blood red robe he wears on special occasions
like Christmas.). 'He will be short, with a crown(of hair).'
The lamb is the sign and symbol of love. Christ did not declare
that he would come again; he said, 'He who sent me will come
again'. 'That Ba-Ba is this Baba', (pointing to himself).
Sai, the short curly hair-crowned, red-robed Baba, has come.
He is not only in this form but He is in every one of you,
as the Dweller in the Heart; He is there, short, with a robe
the colour of the blood that fills it. The Lamb is in everyone.
This is the inner motivator. This is the inner mystery of
the Incarnation. God incarnating in all! All are God; the
One is All."
If you have read "Initiation Into
Miracles", I have quoted another couple of prophesies.
There is also a book titled 'The Scriptures are Fulfilled",
the author of which I believe is Kumar. This is a detailed
cross referencing of all scriptures that pertain to Sai Baba's
advent.
Sri Sathya Sai Satsang
Sharing the blessings of the Divine
Note: There is no intermediary (priest
or leader) between God and Self. Satsang is a spiritual sharing,
a time in which spiritual seekers come together to share in
the praises of the Divine and invoke a shared sense of spiritual
blessing. The chair with the photo of Sri Sathya Sai Baba
on it is "His Chair". He has repeatedly said that
wheresoever my glories are sung, I Am There.
The omkar, 108 names and Gayatri mantra
invoke the Divine Presence. The sole Bhajan (sacred song)
of Manasa Bhajore' continues this process and deepens our
sense of humility, humbleness, reverence and gratitude. The
prayers are shared to express our willingness to be all of
these things and offer ourselves to be instruments of light
in the worlds' unfolding healing.
Omkar - 7 times (to open the door to Spirit)

Gayatri Mantra (3 times)
Om Bhur Bhuvah Suvah

Gayatri is the universal prayer enshrined
in the Vedas, the most ancient scripturesd of Humanity. It
is addressed to the immanent and transcendent Divine that
has been given the name Savitur, meaning that from which all
this is born. The Gayatri has three parts: Praise; Meditation
and Prayer.
Bhajan - Manase Bhajore

young child.

Prayers
Lord's Prayer - Jan leading
North American Indian Prayer - Paul leading
O Great Spirit, Whose voice I
hear in the winds and whose breath gives life to the entire
world, hear me.
I am small and weak
I need your strength and wisdom
Let me walk in beauty and let my eyes ever behold the red
and purple sunset
Make my hands respect the things you have made and my ears
grow sharp to hear your
Voice
Make me wise so that I may understand the things you have
taught my people.
Let me learn the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and
rock.
I seek strength not to be greater than my brother and sister
but fight my greatest enemy, myself
Make me always ready to come to you with clean hands and
straight eyes
So when life fades as the fading sunset my spirit may come
to you without shame.
Great Spirit of love, come to me with the power of the North.
Make me courageous when the cold winds of life fall upon
me.
Give me strength and endurance for everything that is harsh,
everything that hurts, everything that makes me squint.
Make me move through life ready to take what comes from
the North.
Spirit who comes out of the East, come to me with the power
of the rising sun.
Let there be light in my word.
Let there be light on the path that I walk.
